How this calculator works

It follows your money from the client to your bank. First the platform fee comes out. Then the payout method takes fixed fees and a cut hidden in the exchange rate. After that we set aside income tax based on a full year at this monthly amount.

Worked example

You bill $15 an hour for 160 hours on Upwork with a 10% fee, withdraw once through Payoneer, and we use an example rate of ₱56.00 to $1. You're on the 8% option.

  • Client pays $2,400 (₱134,400). Upwork keeps $240, so you get $2,160 (₱120,960).
  • Payoneer's conversion cost (2% assumed; Payoneer's range is 1.2%–4%) is ₱2,419.20, so ₱118,540.80 reaches your bank.
  • A year at this pace is ₱1,451,520 in gross receipts. The 8% tax is (₱1,451,520 − ₱250,000) × 8% = ₱96,121.60, or ₱8,010.13 a month.
  • Take-home is about ₱110,531 a month, or 82.2% of what the client paid. Withdrawing straight to your bank through Upwork would cost only about ₱55 instead of ₱2,419.

Why tax is based on what the platform pays you

The platform fee is the platform's own revenue, so we treat what the platform pays you as your gross receipts. Transfer and FX costs are not deducted before tax. On graduated rates with OSD they are already covered by the 40% deduction. If your accountant reports your income another way, your tax will differ a little.

Fees change often, so edit them

Platform and payout fees are approximate (last checked October 2026) and change without notice. Payoneer can also charge a $29.95 yearly fee if you receive under $6,000 in 12 months. Check the pricing pages linked below and change the numbers to match your own statements. The exchange rate is filled in with the latest European Central Bank reference rate (refreshed hourly); your payout app's rate may differ a little, so edit it to match.

Common questions

How much does Upwork take from freelancers?

Since May 1, 2025, Upwork’s freelancer service fee is variable, from 0% to 15% per contract. Upwork shows the fee for a contract before it starts. This calculator defaults to 10%. Move the slider to match your contract.

How much does Fiverr take?

Fiverr keeps 20% of each order, so a $100 order pays you $80 before withdrawal fees.

Which is cheaper for withdrawing to a Philippine bank: Payoneer, Wise or PayPal?

It depends on the amount. Fixed fees like Upwork’s ~$0.99 or Wise’s US$0.56 matter most on small withdrawals, while percentage costs like Payoneer’s ~2% or PayPal’s ~3% exchange spread matter most on large ones. The calculator ranks the methods for your amount.

Do I need to fill out a W-8BEN for US clients?

Yes, usually. If you live and work in the Philippines, give the platform or your US client Form W-8BEN (for individuals). This certifies you are not a US person, so they don’t withhold 30% US tax from your pay.

Is my Upwork or Fiverr income taxable in the Philippines?

Yes. Filipino residents are taxed on income from all sources, including foreign clients and platforms. Register with the BIR as self-employed and file quarterly (1701Q) and annual returns. Income under ₱250,000 a year can still mean zero income tax on the 8% option, but you still need to file.
